چکیده
Most of the globular clusters in the main body of the Galactic halo were formed almost simultaneously. However, globular cluster formation in dwarf spheroidal galaxies appears to have extended over a significant fraction of a Hubble time. This suggests that the factors which suppressed late-time formation of globulars in the main body of the Galactic halo were not operative in dwarf spheroidal galaxies. Possibly the presence of significant numbers of " young " globulars at R GC > 15 kpc can be accounted for by the assumption that many of these objects were formed in Sagittarius-like (but not Fornax-like) dwarf spheroidal galaxies, that were subsequently destroyed by Galactic tidal forces. It would be of interest to search for low-luminosity remnants of parental dwarf spheroidals around the " young " globulars Eridanus, Palomar 1, 3, 14, and Terzan 7. Furthermore multi-color photometry could be used to search for the remnants of the super-associations, within which outer halo globular clusters originally formed. Such envelopes are expected to have been tidally stripped from globulars in the inner halo. The galaxy is, in fact, nothing but a congeries of innumerable stars grouped together in clusters. We describe the properties and kinematics of the neutral gas in the two dwarf elliptical galaxies NGC 185 and NGC 205, companions of M31. The kinematics of the HI suggest that an internal origin of the gas (i.e. stellar mass loss) should be considered, at least in the case of NGC 185. The molecular clouds in these dwarf ellipticals are similar to Galactic giant molecular clouds in many ways. Ho...

We investigate the effects of changes in the blue straggler formation rate in globular clusters on the blue straggler distribution in the color-magnitude diagram. We find that the blue straggler distribution is highly sensitive to the past formation rate. Comparing our models to new UBV observations of a region close to the core of 47 Tucanae suggests that this cluster may have stopped forming ...

Variations in the number of globular clusters per unit galaxy luminosity, which is the specific frequency, and the mass of globular clusters per unit total available mass, are reviewed. Correlations with galaxy luminosity and morphology, and with the properties of the associated galactic clusters are discussed, as are the color distributions of globular cluster populations. Several models for t...

Previous searches for atomic gas in our Galaxy's dwarf spheroidal companions have not been complete enough to settle the question of whether or not these galaxies have HI, especially in their outer parts. We present new observations of the dwarf spheroidals Sextans, Leo I, Ursa Minor, and Draco, using the NRAO 140-foot telescope to search much farther in radius than has been done before. The ne...
